The transformation in this scene is amazing to see. Very cool. Thanks for sharing this. Absolutely love this book and had so much fun reading it while listening to James Horner’s “Aliens” score. You nailed the vibe you were going for with this book, and I can see how the coysharks would have hurt things compared to the final product.
Love this! And wow it changed a lot. So cool to see this process and it gives me hope 😅 I've been struggling to find my narrator and I've rewritten the beginning so many times to the point that I was thinking that maybe I shouldn't even be writing anymore. But it's finally coming together, although I do have to rewrite it yet again but I'm not going to give up! I absolutely loved Contagion and all the POVs, and Toby was one of my faves! I need to reread it now! Thank you for sharing it!
I find it so fascinating how this story came to be. And I think it’s so interesting that even your “rough drafts” were really compelling, even at their barest bones, because you’re just such a fantastic writer and your characters are so much fun to read about. Even when there wasn’t a lot to it, I still wanted to read more from that first draft you had. I do love how the final novel came together though and really enjoyed the duology!
Love seeing the evolution of this opening. It's always fascinating to think about how many times a book can change this drastically -- and still be the same story, ultimately.

Ah this was so cool to see and such a great lesson in revision. Thank you!
I loved this book 🥰 so cool to see the scenes of how it evolved
Thanks so much for this, Erin. Especially your encouragement to not compare.

Curious what makes it YA? When I look at this cover, it says Adult Sci-fi to me...
