What a great post! Thank you, Erin. I've come to many of the same conclusions as you, mainly that the ups and downs don't matter; I'm going to keep writing simply because I love it and because I must. I have come to the same conclusions about social media; my time is better spent writing books that shouting into the crowd. But your post provided a lot of good information on the publishing industry that I had suspected but never elucidated. I also love that you, like me, will write in many genres, because doing the same thing over and over is boring.
I just hit year 3 since debuting and even in those three years I've seen all these changes you've talked about. It will be very interesting to see how and in what shape publishing rebuilds after the Covid earthquake knocked everything down.
That’s interesting about social media not selling books. I’ve heard that a lot. I wonder if that’ll be different with Substack given that you’ll have eager, paying subscribers which you’d think would want to buy your books? Curious what you think.

Thank you, Erin. I was having a big heart-to-heart with myself about publishing today, and this is all so spot-on.
Thank you so much for this, Erin. I’m heading into debut year and this puts a lot of things into perspective!
